Why I chose this project

Growing up, I remember constantly being told to read, especially for leisure, but I did not think it was important and saw reading as something I was forced to do. I struggled with taking tests on books I read because I had trouble remebering the plot.

My middle school English teachers truly helped me with my issues with comprehension by working with me to find strategies to overcome my struggles. They also recommended books to me they believed I would enjoy. After that, I grew to love reading!

I hope that a child is able to discover the wonder of reading through my program. I want a child to improve their reading skills, understand how to find books they love, and develop a love for reading.

My Gold Award Project

A reading program for 2-10 year olds called This Wonderful Thing Called Reading

  • Goal: develop & enhance a child's love for reading by sharing the wonder of reading with them

    • Ensure a child understands how to find books they love

    • Improve reading skills

    • Make children excited to read at home & at school and see reading as fun

    • Help children work beyond their struggles

  • Provide a place for parents where their child can be read to if they have trouble finding time to read to them at home or want them to read

How does the program work?

I can read to your child, they can read to me, or read the books I provide then in a fun way, I will ask them questions about what was read or do comprehension activities with them and also work on skills such as pronunciation and vocabulary as well as any struggles you mentioned
